Residential building renovation and loft conversion
in Vienna's 8th district (Mölkergasse)
2004–2005
The starting point for our renovation and conversion concept was the desire to preserve the historical character while at the same time bringing the residential building up to a modern and contemporary standard of living. The treatment of the roof space plays a key role in this: here, in the Belletage of the 21st century, spacious, light-flooded luxury apartments are created and yet the compact and calm roof structure, which is undoubtedly an essential part of the overall appearance, is not broken up and fragmented.
We have exposed the overall volume of the roof structure in its mighty form and made it tangible both from the inside and the outside. Like a house within a house or like a musical instrument in its case, a second-order body is fitted into this volume, hanging from the large roof shell and thus allowing the main level of the attic apartments to play freely: free of supports and chair columns, free of unnecessary walls and fixtures. The result is apartments that on the one hand have the spaciousness of a loft, but on the other have all the functions and amenities of modern luxury apartments virtually in the pockets of the new roof construction. The inner buildings, which stand or hang in the loft-like halls, are conceived as movable, spatial bodies that accommodate and form all the functions of living like oversized furniture.
