Pratermuseum
A place for everyone, a place of encounter
2021–2024
The new Prater Museum - in the centre of Vienna's ‘Wurstelprater’ - presents the cultural and natural history of the entire historic Prater area in a variety of ways. With its lightweight construction, the new museum building follows the tradition of historical Prater architecture, but interprets it in a radically new way. In contrast to the surrounding structures, the shape of the building is conceived contextually: the silhouette of the museum keeps the view from Kratky-Baschik-Weg to the Giant Ferris Wheel free and, thanks to its height and striking roof shape, forms a kind of landmark in the middle of the Prater hustle and bustle. The building is accessible from two directions and is very low-threshold; the semi-public ground floor can be traversed without admission and invites visitors to linger without consumption. The result is a new meeting place. In terms of sustainability, the museum was built predominantly from renewable raw materials (wood) and consumes very little energy during operation thanks to its alternative building services concept, despite the highest demands.
