Hand

Contribution to the Exhibition "Der Hände Werk"

2017–2019

The “Hand” is an object specially developed for Schallaburg Castle that can be used by visitors like furniture. It is located in the walkway of Schallaburg halfway through the exhibition tour and invites visitors to relax, unwind and lounge around after viewing the first half of the exhibition.
Inspired by Corbusier's hand objects (Open Hand Monument), the shape of the object was developed from a friendly opening hand gesture as central seating/lounge furniture.
The construction and design of the object explore the limits of what can be achieved by hand, i.e. by craftsmanship, and extend this to include the possibilities of digital production.
The irregular bar truss was optimized together with the structural engineers from Bollinger-Grohmann. The 111 nodes of the truss are all different due to the complex geometry and can only be produced economically with a special 3D printing process made of glass fiber reinforced polyamide.
In terms of size (length approx. 380 cm) and structure, the object oscillates between furniture, room installation and exhibition architecture. Despite parametric, digital 3D planning down to the smallest detail, production requires a high degree of craftsmanship and understanding of the material.
