Extension mumok

Study for an extension of the mumok

2017

The study examines an expansion of the mumok at the Museumplatz location on the corner of Mariahilfer Strasse in Vienna. The aim is to improve the visibility of the museum in the urban space and to create new areas for temporary exhibitions, the library and the archive. The recessed ground floor zone with foyer, store and café will open up to the urban space and create a low-threshold, highly visible entrance.
For the new exhibition areas, we are proposing a cube made of black through-colored exposed concrete. A ramp system spirals around this cube from street level to the uppermost exhibition hall: a boulevard on which visitors circle the cube several times while being offered various views of the urban space and insights into the exhibition areas.
The load-bearing core of the building is arranged in such a way that it can be founded between the existing underground parking garage and the subway passage.
The mumok cube marks the striking urban crossroads in front of the Museumsquartier, anchors this cultural area, which appears closed to the outside world, in the city and, together with the taller Wilhelminian-style building at Mariahilfer Strasse 1, creates a gateway to the popular shopping street.
